报告摘要
In electrochemical energy storage devices, the role of the solid state electrolyte interface is essential when the electrode potentials are outside the stability window of the electrolyte. Formation of such interfaces is driven by the decomposition of the electrolyte either through oxidation or reduction Controlling the composition and morphology of the interfacial layer is usually accomplished by changing the electrolyte composition. A well known example Is the use of electrolyte additives in lithium-ion batteries to promote the formation of a more desirable layer, The chemistry of these formation reactions Is complex and the products are mixtures of polymers, inorganic salts, and organometallics. These complexities make it challenging to determine the exact performance enhancement factors and rationally design electrolyte chemistries.
We have been recently focusing on synthesis of compounds in electrolyte solutions that can precipitate on electrode surfaces with well known chemical compositions. These compounds are formed through designed synthetic chemistry in solution rather than redox reactions on electrodes. As a result, the interfacial layer is well defined chemically. which greatly facilitates developing correlations between layer chemistry and electrochemical Performance. We will discuss two examples using this solution synthesis strategy for coating of lithium surface: alkyl lithium carbonates and lithium phosphorous sulfides. The former provides effective protection to enable dendrite free Lithium cycling while the later Paves the path towards all solid state batteries.
