1993年中国科学院长春应用化学研究所获博士学位，2003年11月至2004年5月加拿大蒙特利尔大学和美国纽约州立大学石溪分校访问教授，现为南开大学教授，博士生导师，2004年入选教育部“新世纪人才支持计划”，2006年获国家杰出青年基金的支持，2012年教育部创新团队功能高分子材料的学术带头人。《离子交换与吸附》杂志副主编，《高分子学报》编委。

作为第一作者或者通讯联系人在国际核心杂志共发表研究论文90余篇，包括Nature Nanotechnology、Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.、Macromolecules等，论文被引用1100余次。出版专著3部（参编），三项成果实现产业化。
